Hello Fall! Prepare Your Home for the Season

Hi there,

Julia here. As the leaves change color and the air turns crisp, fall is the perfect time to freshen up your home and tackle essential home repairs and maintenance tasks. It's my favorite time of the year as I love to open windows, go for long walks, decorate my home, and cook fresh, comfy food. So, here are some ideas and areas to focus on this season:

Inspect and Clean Gutters

With autumn leaves falling, your gutters can quickly get clogged. Clean them out to prevent water damage and ensure proper drainage. If you're comfortable doing so, use a ladder and gloves. I do this with my garage only; otherwise, consider hiring a professional. Also, ensure water gets guided away from the house to prevent basement flooding or possible foundation issues.

Check Heating Systems

Before the first frost hits, it's essential to make sure your heating system is in good working order and your filters are clean. Look for filters with a MERV rating of 8 to 13 that provide even better filtration.......I know I am the "clean freak" check the thermostat and consider scheduling a professional inspection. This will help ensure you stay warm when the temperatures drop :).

Seal Windows and Doors

Of course, you know this....but rafty windows and doors can lead to increased heating bills. Inspect seals and weatherstripping, and replace any damaged areas. Use caulk for gaps, and consider adding door sweeps for an extra layer of protection. Btw.....you can check for drafts by holding a lit candle near windows and doors; if the flame flickers, you have a draft ;).

Winterize Outdoor Faucets & Sprinklers

Prevent pipes from freezing by disconnecting and draining hoses. Install insulated covers on outdoor faucets, and if you have an irrigation system, make sure it's properly winterized. To ensure, all water has been removed, I recommend going with a professional!

Create a Cozy Atmosphere in your Home

Fall is synonymous with rich colors, but you can modernize the palette by incorporating muted tones. I love deep greens, burnt sienna, and warm neutrals paired with soft greys and blacks. Use these colors in your throw pillows, blankets, and wall art to create a sophisticated yet inviting environment. Choose seasonal plants like mums, branches, or ornamental kale to celebrate the season while keeping it fresh. Succulents or snake plants can provide a modern touch without the need for much maintenance. Yes, keep it simple!

By tackling these fall maintenance tasks, you'll not only keep your home in great shape but also create a warm, inviting environment for the colder months ahead. Take the opportunity to refresh your home with modern decor that reflects the season's beauty while maintaining a chic aesthetic. And as always, if you need any help, we are here for you! Whether it's getting the right contractor or making your home "junique," we are just a click or call away. Happy fall!
